Background information of Ahero Awasi Municipality
The proposed municipality will consist of Ahero and Awasi-Onjiko wards. There are two key urban centres in the proposed municipality, namely, Ahero and Awasi.
Ahero is an agricultural town in Nyando Sub County, Kisumu County, located 25 kilometers South East of Kisumu City. The town is at a junction of the Nairobi-Kisumu (A104) and the Kisii-Kisumu (A1) highways, making it a transport node. It was the 2ND urban Centre, after Maseno town, to be upgraded to a town on 2nd November, 2022, by His Excellency the governor of Kisumu County, Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o.
Ahero is nestled in the Kano plains, a rich agricultural area mainly growing rice, sugarcane and soya. The town has a retail market serving as a main trading centre for food and goods coming from Kisii, Homabay, and Nandi; this accounts for much of the town’s trade and commerce. Informal sector activities such as hawking, kiosks, open-air fish-frying, and boda-bodas, provide a source of income to a significant proportion of the population.
Awasi is an urban Centre also located in Nyando Sub County, about 18.3 Kilometers from Ahero town. The Centre also lies along Nairobi – Kisumu Highway, strategically at the border of Kisumu and Kericho Counties hence its famous name ‘Awasi-Border’. The direct link and close proximity to Ahero makes transportation of goods and services in the proposed municipality efficient. The Centre has recently grown substantially due to trade between the Luo and Kalenjin communities among other Kenyan tribes. Investors have also been able to establish a presence in the Centre with various companies establishing a strong presence in the town. companies like Gogni Rajope (deals in road construction), Vic Block Company, Stone Field company LTD, Rai Cement Company LTD, Kibos sugar company cane collection yard, Steel Mills, among others have made entry in this small town. This shows how confident investors are regarding the Centre. It was officially Gazetted as a municipality on the 13th October 2023 by His Excellency the governor of Kisumu County, Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o.
